The Five Short Vowels of New Zealand English

Christopher , Soni and Satai have been learning about the middle short vowel sounds. They focused on /a/ /o/ and /i/. Firstly, they used their phonemic awareness to listen carefully to each sound and then decided which picture matched which middle short vowel. After, they wrote the word and a phrase which matched the picture. They then practised reading their words and phrases whilst paying close attention to the short vowel. Well done Christopher, Soni and Satai!

Powerful Student Voice from Rosemary in Year 8

“When my family and I relocated from Samoa to New Zealand, it was hard for me to learn a different language. I was worried students would make fun of me. I had my reading, writing and spelling test...I was at the below stage unlike everybody else. Thankfully The Code (Structured Literacy) started in Robertson Road School. I love Code! I enjoyed every minute of it. I never wanted to miss a day of Code. At the beginning of the week we learn a sound either a short-vowel, long vowel, split digraph or a trigraph. At the end of the week we look back at the sound(s) and revise on it. The Code took my English into a higher level. The Code helped with my weaknesses in literacy. With The Code I was able to read English vocabulary fluently, it helped me with writing words and knowing what sounds I need to use. Our Structured Literacy Journey (so far!) at RRS

Our Structured Literacy Journey At Robertson Road School we are proud to be a pioneering school, not only in our M ān gere Community ( Auckland South), but also in New Zealand, who has implemented a Structured Literacy approach to teaching reading and spelling from Years 0-8. Our Literacy Coach, Liz Kane, from Liz Kane Literacy has been supporting and guiding our journey since April 2019. But why did things needs to change? Through our data analysis, student voice and formative assessments it became clear that many of our learners were struggling to read and spell words they did not know or had not memorised. Too many learners throughout the school did not have the letter-sound knowledge of English or have the strategies to read and spell unknown words, which resulted in an over reliance on guessing strategies and looking at the picture(s) to gain meaning. This meant many learners throughout our school were unable to make progress, which in turn, led to low self-esteem, disengagem
